[morning comes, and like all those mornings before it, she's up to see the sun. only this time it's not rising over wilderness or old ruins, it's over a proper city, and she's still not used to it.

but there's time to pause and properly appreciate the view, and she's grateful for that. today has to be her last day being absent from her place in Mair, has to be the day she leaves to go see Waver and speak to him like she'd promised, has to be the last day she spends looking like she just came in from her journey.

well, she can waste a few hours.

so walking around in the daylight (so novel, after being placed), she takes her time to marvel at the landscape, the lightness that a lack of responsibility is. and her carefree thoughts pause when she sees a very familiar blonde man's back a ways off. him, here? whatever for?

it doesn't really matter, because she's going to weave her way closer, a half smile on her face when she calls out.]

Berserker?

[She's just missed the one she intends to speak to. Hyde prefers the night, he's stronger in the night, and after all, it is the time most predators prefer, with the cover of darkness. And now, it's the other, the good doctor going about his business, fetching water and supplies for his work for the day. His sleeves are rolled up to the elbow, coat abandoned back inside, along with his cravat, and his collar unbuttoned. Far from proper, but what else is he to do while working? Still, he's fully aware of the fact, and when he turns at the call of his name, he immediately starts rearranging himself.]

Yes? What can I do for you?

[the change in his eye colour doesn't pass her by -- on its own, she would brush it off as a Drabwurld occurrence. the fact that he thinks he needs to fix himself up, well goodness, she didn't think she warranted that much ceremony.]

Oh, there's nothing I would require of you other than to say it's been quite some time since we've seen each other. These are far better circumstances, undoubtedly -- have you been well?

[The oddity of that surprises him too much to consider the reason, initially. Does he know this woman? No, surely he wouldn't forget anyone he's met, especially who knows his name, one simply doesn't allow oneself to forget, that's the sort of society he's used to, after all. And yet it seems that he must have forgotten - and how terrible that is.

But no sooner have those questions crossed his mind as he (accidentally) gives her a puzzled look, than he realises the clear answer. Of course it's because of Hyde, she's thinking of his other self, while Jekyll's no memory of her. He isn't sure if it's better or worse that she seems to like him well enough.

His face falls, and Jekyll searches for some explanation to give.]

-Ah, oh, no, I see, you've met him...

Him?

[now it's her turn to look puzzled, because she's certain she knows him -- apart from his difference in eye color and how he looks just slightly not right (and that was taking into account him naturally not being covered in blood) -- and then the answer hits her. goodness.]

Oh, my sincerest apologies for putting you in this awkward position. He never mentioned he had a twin brother.

[she has the decency to look away, as though the mistake embarrasses her for its foolishness.]

[Twin brother. That assumption is more than a shock, so much so that, well, how can he not agree with it? That's as good an excuse as any, really. More believable than two personalities.]

No, not at all, we are far from close, it is no surprise he made no mention of the fact! Still, the fault is upon the two of us and not yourself. It is a pleasure to meet you, Miss Sutcliffe, please forgive the awkward position we have put you in.

[He offers his hand to shake, smiling.] I am Berserker, as you know, I suppose.

[family discord? such a thing was hardly unheard of, and in the Drabwurld they might not be forced to interact at all and could happily conduct their lives for the time being. she suspects there's something more complex about the matter if they share the Berserker title -- perhaps they were not always so estranged.

in any case, she returns the smile and accepts the handshake.]

[she nods to the supplies. there's still time to kill in the day.]

[It strikes him as strange to be so cordial with a friend of Hyde's, but still, manners are important, and her association with him shouldn't have to reflect poorly on Grell. So he goes with instinct of good manners, and bends to kiss her hand.]

Not a bit, I have plenty of time, please do not worry or trouble yourself at all. I only hope my brother has conducted himself well in your presence, and certainly if not, then I must atone in his place.

[if only he knew how his actions mirrored those of his brother. she'll not tell him.]

He has, I assure you, on all the occasions we've encountered one another. Else I would not bother announcing my presence. There's not a single word to atone for.

[Well, that's...a surprise. Maybe he shouldn't pursue the subject, but on the other hand, it's troubling not to know what his other half is up to, in his body. Even if it's innocent, which he has to doubt, considering the way Hyde is.]

[He gestures back toward the spire. There are plenty there who do. Well, far less than there had been after the fall of the castle, but even so, there are always sick and injured.]

[but she does enjoy the praise. it's true, after all, her skill was why her training had been respected.]

[His smile grows, and he offers a dip of his head.]

Would if I could stay longer in this place. The design is unlike anything I've ever dreamed of, truly a sight to bewitch the mind entirely.

I made a promise to return to Mair as soon as my work at this Spire was complete. It has already been some weeks, I cannot shirk my duties for longer than a few more days. And at least one of those must be spent convincing a friend that I am very much alive and unhurt. But...there is still some time.

[He laughs.] Certainly, if you would wish me to be your guide, I would be honoured.

[And what else can he do but bow, and offer his arm to lead her? It's the sociable thing to do.]

You hold a position in Mair?

[she would curtsy, if only she were in skirts. it is enough then to nod her head and take his arm, hand resting ever so lightly on him.]

Yes. I am the right hand of Lord Ganondorf. It is to him that I made the promise -- timing was ill to leave, after the battles, but instructions from Her Majesty supersede all else, a fact none can deny. I can only hope the city has been well in the interim.

[it's rare she speaks of her position like this -- it's only been a matter of months since she rose to it, and something like it was in so much loftier heights than what she had borne for so long. as strange to wear as the title of Red Knight was, so did hang her other, Lady of Mair. but an actress never shows her awkwardness.]

[It solidifies his idea that she must be noble. Or at least, he hopes and thinks so, based on what he's seen so far. But that doesn't explain why she and Hyde would get along. Maybe it's only for his help in the training. That must be all. That plagues him as he leads her along the path, but he tries to think the best of everything.]

I can only imagine how very busy you must be - I will not be offended in the least if you must cut our tour short at any time. Duty comes first, after all, as you say.

Please, if anything I would beg you to take your time. You cannot imagine how it feels to finally have a day for myself amidst everything.

Tell me more about yourself--how did you end up at the Spire?

Much like yourself, it was requested of me to lead refugees here, after the destruction of the castle. This was perhaps a month previous now, but I enjoyed the company of many, and wish not only to personally see to their wellbeing but made a promise to the baron to help as I am able. Moreover another commitment brings me here often, as a sort of personal meal to a vampire friend, for lack of any better wording.

[He laughs with the last part, really how else do you put the arrangement he has with Paloma.]
